Last week I was on the train and I started drawing, as I am wont to do and I noticed a man watching what I was drawing. It didn't bother me because I'm used to people watching me draw in a public place. It actually makes me draw better because there's the pressure of not wanting to screw up in front of a spectator.
Anyway, the guy decides that he wants to start talking to me. That's also perfectly normal for me. He asks me what I'm drawing and I respond with "I'm not quite sure yet. I'm making it up as I go along." He seemed impressed with the fact that I could just make something up off the top of my head and told me that I was very good at drawing. At that point, I only had the basic outline of the body done. I thanked him.
Then... he asked how old I was. I knew where this was going so I told him to take a guess. "16 or 17?" was his response. I told him I was 27. His expression changed completely. He was no longer amazed at my talent, instead he seemed almost appalled. "Wow. It's, uhh... good that you're still doing.. THAT, then." was the last thing he said to me. He kept silent for the rest of the train ride.
That. Yes.. THAT. THAT was what I was doing.
So what was THAT about?
Apparently, it's okay for a teenager to be an aspiring artist with lots of potential, but at 27, you're supposed to have given up the dream? You're supposed to put your imagination on the back burner, or just abandon it completely to settle for a more 'grown-up' job? It irks me when people think that drawing is nothing more than childish nonsense that kids do when they're bored or don't want to pay attention in school.
So who is it that illustrates graphic novels and comic books? Who animates all those cartoons out there? Who does all the concept illustrations for video games and movies? SPOILER ALERT: Grown-ups do. NOT children or teenagers.
That is all.
Have a nice day.
